Rye Brook Together Trustee Candidates Call for
Pedestrian Plan and Design Study for Southern Part of Village

Rye Brook, New York, February 10, 2010 – Rye Brook Together Trustee Candidates Jeff Rednick and Toby Marrow announced today that if elected they would pursue preparation of a Pedestrian Plan and Design Study for the southern part of the Village.

“The southern part of Rye Brook is a mixed-use corridor of residences, schools, offices and shopping centers punctuated by major four lane roadways,” said Trustee candidate Jeff Rednick. It was originally developed with very little strategic planning. Essentially Rye Brook has a downtown with no sidewalks. The primary objectives of a Pedestrian Plan and Design Study are safety, security, convenience, continuity, comfort, system coherence and attractiveness.”

“We need to create design standards and pedestrian requirements for any future commercial development along South Ridge Street, Westchester Avenue and Bowman Avenue,” said Trustee candidate Marrow. “It’s impossible to have a convenient and sustainable downtown if you can’t walk from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ safely. And, we have dozens of school children trying to get to the Port Chester Middle School to consider also.”

Both candidates agreed that a cost effective way to accomplish this was to make this a “mini-comprehensive plan” along the lines of the Recreation Zone Study now being conducted by the Village’s Planner. “This certainly would have been part of the now delayed Comprehensive Plan had village finances permitted” said Marrow. Rednick added that Mayor Feinstein, in her recent “State of the Village” address, had supported the concept of “mini-plans” to handle the most pressing issues facing the Village, and, he said, “this, we believe, certainly fits that definition.”
